The Sri Lankan government's claim on a continental shelf has raised objections from India, Bangladesh and the Maldives, reports the Dhaka Tribune.
Sri Lanka has made a submission before the United Nations that claims a portion of a continental shelf, an underwater land mass that extends from the seabed of a country, which Bangladesh also laid claim too.
“It also appears that Sri Lanka has claimed an outer continental shelf entitlement in an area that is 350 nautical miles more from the baseline from which the breadth of its territorial sea is measured and more than 100 nautical miles from the 2,500 metres isobaths, and thus beyond the constraints line established by Article 76(5) of the convention,” said an objection note submitted by Dhaka.
India and the Maldives also objected to Sri Lanka's claim, according to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), which has been an issue of contention since 2009.
