Sri Lanka's former army commander welcomed to UNP by Sri Lanka's Prime Minister

Sri Lanka’s former army commander Sarath Fonseka was given membership to United National Party (UNP) by Sri Lanka's Prime  Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today, reports Colombo Gazette.

The announcement from the spokesperson of the UNP who said Mr Fonseka obtained the party membership from the party leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at party headquarters on Thursday.

In February Fonseka, who was earlier the leader of the Democratic Party was appointed as a minister and given a vacant seat in parliament.

The decision drew much criticism NGOs and civil society, due to Fosneka’s role at the end of the armed conflict which saw mass atrocities take place.
