The Sri Lankan military showcased the combat skills of its “Infantry Special Mission Groups (ISMG)” at an army base in Punanai last month, highlighting the use of troops in “covert and overt operations”.
An official military website said the ISMG could be deployed “where situations are sensitive and fragile which demands small scale and individual military actions”.
Soldiers took part in a demonstration of the Reality Based Self Defence (RBSD) training module, which the military stated “is pivotal for engagements and disengagements with aggressive crowds and individuals”.
“These trained groups can be directed to collect information, int-collecting, ops and strikes on the approval of relevant authorities,” it added.
The Sri Lankan military continues to maintain a massive presence in the Tamil North-East of the island, despite repeated calls for demilitarisation.
