Sri Lankan president hopes for Buddhist revitalisation

Sri Lanka’s president said he hoped for “revitalisation” of the Buddhist Sasana, as he called upon the newly appointed chief Buddhist monk of the Asgiriya Chapter on Sunday.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), Maithripala Sirisena offered gifts and received blessings from the monk, a tradition carried out by all of Sri Lanka’s presidents.

“President Sirisena further said that he believes under the guidance and advices of the newly appointed Mahanayaka Thero, there will be a revitalization of the Sasana,” said the PMD.

“It is the desire of the government to make the country economically prosperous with the inspiration of the Buddhist philosophy while nourishing the other religions as well,” added Mr Sirisena, who as accompanied by several other high ranking government ministers.
