Sri Lankan navy takes part in German golf tournament despite human rights concerns

Members of the Sri Lankan navy are currently in Germany, as they participate in the 12th World Military Golf Championship, despite concerns of human rights abuses committed by Sri Lankan troops.

A team of Sri Lankan naval soldiers left the island earlier this week, to compete at the tournament in Münster, Germany. 124 soldiers from 14 nations are expected to take part in this event.

Sri Lankan soldiers are accused of breaking international law during a massive military offensive which concluded in 2009. Tens of thousands of Tamils were killed. Security forces remain accused of committing continued human rights abuses, with reports that torture continues to take place on the island.
