The head of Sri Lanka’s navy, Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera met with the Chief of Naval Operations of the US navy, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, during a visit to the US.
Perera is in the country to attend the 21st International Sea Power Symposium (ISS) at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, which this year is being held under the theme of "Global Solutions to Common Maritime Challenges".
According to the defence ministry’s website, Vice Admiral Perera was able to meet a number of naval chiefs from across the globe, holding “cordial discussions and sharing perspectives” on common interests.
Perera was Deputy Area Commander Eastern Naval Area, during Sri Lanka’s assault on the northeast of the island in 2006. He continued to serve in the navy, in various functions, for the duration of the armed conflict, during which mass atrocities are reported to have been perpetrated by the Sri Lankan armed forces.
