Sirisena visits Jaffna after protests over school girl rape

The Sri Lankan president, Maithripala Sirisena visted Jaffna on Monday following last week's protests over the rape and murder of a school girl in Pungudutivu.

Landing by helicopter at 10am this morning, Mr Sirisena was greeted by the chief minister of the northern province, C V Wigneswaran.

Mr Sirisena met with military personal and police officers in the region regarding the security situation after protests became violent.

Meeting with the parents of the murdered school girl, Vithiya, as well as students from around 17 schools in the Jaffna Peninsula convened at Vembadi Girls' High School, Mr Sirisena pledged that an inquiry would be formed and those responsible will be brought to justice.
