The Northern Provincial councillor, T Ravikaran, on Monday remembered the slaughter of Tamils at the Nanthi Kadal lagoon in Mullaitivu during the final days of Sri Lanka's armed conflict, despite police issuing an order prohibiting him from holding remembrance rallies in the district.
In a solitary act of silence remembrance, Mr Ravikaran said prayers and cast flowers into the waters of the lagoon, which is now infamous for the bloody massacre that took place on its shores in May 2009.
"This Nanthi Kadal [lagoon] is the silent witness to final scenes of our great history's sad ending. Paying respects to this lagoon, which carries the tears and blood of many of our loved ones, I laid flowers in remembrance of our loved ones who have lost their lives here," Mr Ravikaran told reporters.
