More shelling in Syria as Russia opposes intervention

Intense overnight shelling has killed at least 17 civilians in Syria according to the latest reports, as Russia expressed growing concerns about the situation in the country.

The latest attacks were reported from the southern town of Deraa, where frequent clashes between rebels and government forces have taken place since the beginning of the uprising last year.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated the situation was becoming “more alarming” telling a news conference,

"An impression is being created that Syria is on the verge of a full-scale civil conflict."

However, went on to say that Russia still opposed any foreign intervention in the country, commenting,

"All this is a dangerous game. Our position remains unchanged.

Nevertheless, Lavrov said that he would back Assad’s departure, if that was the will of the Syrian people, suggesting a weakening of Russian support for the Syrian President. Lavrov stated,

"If the Syrians agree [on Assad's departure] between each other, we will only be happy to support such a solution"

"But … it is unacceptable to impose the conditions for such a dialogue from outside.
