An update on the Ministry of Defence website, which requires approval for foreigners to travel to the North, was made in error, military spokesperson Brigadier Jayantha Jayaweera claimed, according to Ceylonews.
Speaking to the news website, the brigadier said it was a technical mistake.
“The web link which was originally published in 2014 got republished when we transferred the web server. There is no travel restriction for anybody to travel north whatsoever,” Brigadier Jayaweera told Ceylon News via phone.
He said that the technical team has been informed to deactivate the link as soon as possible.

Foreign Passport holders traveling to the following areas in the North are required to inform the MOD & UD and obtain prior approval. They can apply by fax or online.
Jaffna District
Kilinochchi District
Mulaithivu District
Mannar District (only areas north of Vidattaltivu)
Vavuniya District (only areas north of Omanthai)
The following details are required to be submitted.
1. Name
2. Passport Number
3. Country
4. Intended date of travel
5. Intended date of return
6. Purpose
7. Mode of travel (Air/Rail/Public transport/Private vehicle)
8. Vehicle registration (only if private vehicle)
9. Name of the driver (only if private vehicle)
10. Whether multiple entries be required during the stipulated period)
(As of now requests up to 3 months considered for multiple entry)
Note: In order to facilitate ongoing projects and investments it is proposed to send such applications, where necessary, through relevant agencies such as BOI, Ministry of Economic Development, Commissioner General for Reconciliation etc.
