Karunanidhi's health declines further

The health of the incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president Kalaignar M Karunanidhi has deteriorated, the executive director of the hospital said in a statement today.

The 94-year old five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu was admitted into the Kauvery hospital branch in Chennai’s Alwarpet after contracting a UTI and high fever on July 28.

Since his initial hospitalisation, attributed to "age related overall decline in his general health, altered liver function and haematological parameters," several prominent politicians, including Indian PM Modi, INC chief Gandhi, Tamil Nadu CM Palaniswamy, President Ram Nath Kovind, VP Venkiah Naidu, and representatives of SL President Sirisena, as well as many actors, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith, Goundamani, Vijay, and more, have visited DMK working president MK Stalin to inquire about the leader’s health.

A press release from the hospital’s executive director and chief orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, noted that "[Karunanidhi] is on continuous monitoring and being treated with active medical support" and that "[h]is response to the medical intervention over the next 24 hours will determine the prognosis."

A swath of supporters have camped outside the hospital, waving DMK flags and reciting chants.
