Jaffna University commemorates 39th anniversary of Black July

Marking the 39th anniversary of Black July, Jaffna University students held a memorial on campus to commemorate the thousands of Tamils killed.

Speaking at the memorial, one of the speakers stated:

"Tamil shops were destroyed by goons. Our people were burned in the streets. An unspeakable suffering that our people still endure. We still have not received justice for the racism that continues. We remember all who were killed in the 1983 pogrom".

During the memorial black flags were hoisted and flown at half-mast. There was also a candlelight vigil to mourn the estimated 3,000 slaughtered during the anti-Tamil pogrom.
