Iceland's president vows to strengthen bonds of friendship with Sri Lanka

Meeting with Sri Lankan President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, President of Iceland, congratulated the Sri Lankan premier on his appointment and vowed that he would work to strengthen the bond of friendship between the two countries.

Speaking on Wickremesinghe's record, Jóhannesson asserted his confidence that the Sri Lankan president would meet the economic challenges his country faced whilst stressing the need to preserve social harmony. His statement follows a draconian crackdown on peaceful demonstrators by Sri Lankan security forces and growing unrest over the unequal treatment of different communities on the island.

President Johannesson reportedly also spoke on issues such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic and environmental threats.
