As torrential rainfalls ravaged the Tamil homeland over the past week, it has emerged that nearly 5,700 acres of farmland have been severely damaged in the Mannar district.
Assistant Commissioner to the Mannar Agrarian Services Department, A. Merin Kumar revealed that much of the land, now deluged, was earmarked for cultivation in the farming season between 2021 to 2022.
The Divisional Secretariat of Manthai West is the worst-affected with 2,380 acres of farmland swamped and Musali Divisional Secretariat coming second in terms of the gravity of the impact with 990 acres flooded with water.
Other farming areas including those in Nanattan and Mannar city have also witnessed considerable degrees of inundation, posing a serious risk to the livelihood of farmers.
Overall, 5700 acres of farmland in Mannar have been submerged as a result of the heavy rains that lashed the North-East and Tamil Nadu over the previous week.
The depth of Kattukarai lake in Mannar, the second largest in the Northern Province, has risen to 11.5 feet. Water levels are further reported to be rising.
