Four Sri Lankan officers killed when rogue sergeant opens fire


Four Sri Lankan police officers assigned to Thirukkovil Police, in the Ampara district, were shot dead when a rogue sergeant opened fire before surrendering to  Ethimale Police station with two T-56 assault rifles and 19 rounds of ammunition.

The shootings occurred at 10:30 last night and saw the immediate deaths of three people whilst one constable died up admission to Kalmunai Hospital. The attack saw the deaths of a police sergeant, two constables, and a police constable driver. Two other constables were hospitalised. 

Following the shooting when the OIC arrived at the police station, the suspect reportedly shot at their jeep causing it to lose control and crash into a nearby building.

A special team under the direction of Senior DIG in charge of the Eastern Province has been appointed to investigate the attack and the underlying motive of the shooter.
