Elderly Tamil man arrested after protest against Sri Lankan police corruption

An elderly Tamil man has been arrested in Kilinochchi after he staged a protest against corruption in the Sri Lankan police force.

The gentleman staged his protest as an event took place to lay stones for a court building in Kilinochchi earlier today. He accused Sri Lankan police officers in the city of threatening local Tamils and demanding bribes. One Sri Lankan police officer in particular was accused of eliciting bribes, with the individual having since been reportedly transferred to Neduntheevu in Jaffna.

Whilst Sri Lankan judges and police officials were sat on a stage, the elderly man climbed up a nearby tree and held a small poster demanding an end to police corruption.

Sri Lankan police immediately arrested the gentleman and have reportedly held him on grounds of disrupting the court’s activities.
