Batticaloa Municipal Council pays tribute ahead of Heroes’ Day commemorations

The Batticaloa Municipal Council paid tribute to fallen Tamil fighters ahead of Great Heroes’ Day, or Maaveerar Naal, as councillors marked the opening of today’s general meeting with a remembrance observance held inside the Municipal Council Hall.

The tribute took place during the sixth general meeting of the eighth council, chaired by Mayor Shivam Pakkianathan. At the start of the session councillors stood to honour Great Heroes’ Day, which commemorates those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Tamil independence.

The Mayor announced that the council would formally pay tribute during the sitting, stating that the remembrance on November 27 will honour “those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the political rights of the Tamil people”.

The tribute in Batticaloa comes as institutions and communities across the Tamil homeland begin their remembrance events in the lead-up to 27 November, when Eelam Tamils worldwide mark Maaveerar Naal and honour the cadres who died in the liberation struggle.
