Families of 275 fallen Tamil liberation fighters from Puthukudiyiruppu were honoured today as part of the upcoming Maaveerar Naal commemorations across the Mullaitivu district, in a ceremony that brought together relatives, community activists and diaspora supporters to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the Tamil struggle.
The event began with the parents and next of kin of the fallen cadres being welcomed and adorned with garlands, a gesture that has become a defining part of remembrance rituals across the Tamil homeland despite years of state obstruction.

Nesamma, the mother of three heroes – or Maaveerar in Tamil - and the wife of a patriot, lit the main ceremonial flame. A second memorial flame was lit by Tamil diaspora members, homeland activist Vichu, Ezhugai Organisation leader Ruban, Eastern Province director of the Annai Foundation Thirisha, former fighter Praba, a fallen hero’s wife and social activist Kani, and social activist Jeevatharsan.
Senior member Kakka Annan then lit the flame before an illustration of the gloriosa lily flower - or kartigai poo - and placed a floral garland, followed by Nandan, a director of the Annai Foundation, who lit another ceremonial flame and garlanded the memorial before floral tributes were laid.

Commemorative speeches reflected on the sacrifices of the Maaveerar and the continuing struggle for justice, remembrance and the protection of the Tamil homeland. Dry ration packs and fruit saplings were presented to the parents of the Maaveerar as tokens of honour.

The event was organised by the Annai Foundation under the theme “Let us love our land and our people.” Funding was provided entirely by two Tamil diaspora supporters, enabling the recognition of all 275 families.
Across Mullaitivu and the wider Tamil homeland, preparations for Maaveerar Naal have intensified in recent days, with communities organising remembrance events, site clean-ups and family honour ceremonies despite the heavy militarisation that continues to cast a shadow over the region.
