Widespread protests over Islam film

The protests over the obscure movie about Mohammad have escalated around the world.

Three protestors died after thousands of people attacked the US embassy in Khartoum, according to Sudanese state radio.

The mob initially attacked the German embassy and set fire to it, causing severe damage.

The British embassy nearby also saw protests but was not damaged. Germany and the UK have no link to the film.

"I condemn in the strongest possible terms today's attack and call on the Sudanese authorities to ensure that those involved are brought to justice," said UK Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Tunisia’s capital saw violent clashes, with protestors managing to break into the US embassy compound.

Two people are reported to have died in the protest in Tunis. An American school in the capital was also attacked and looters then raided the building.

Protests in Cairo also saw one person killed. The Muslim Brotherhood initially called for widespread demonstrations, but then called them off after protests escalated.

"In light of the events of the last two days, the Brotherhood has decided to participate only in a symbolic protest in Tahrir Square, so that there is no more destruction to property, or injuries, or deaths, as has happened in the past," the group's secretary general Mahmud Hussein said in a statement.

86 people were arrested in Chennai after several hundred protesters threw stones at the US embassy in the South Indian city.

Protests were also reported in Yemen, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Afghanistan and Nigeria.
