'Who gave weapons to the killers?' ask Tamils as more shots fired in Nochikulam

Tamils in Nochikulam launched a protest on Tuesday after a farmer survived being shot at, in what locals describe as the latest in repeated incidents of targeted gun violence.

Residents of Nochikulam blocked the Mannar-Medawachchiya main road, along Uyilankulam – Nochikulam.

It is reported that the individual, a farmer had been watering the field near his home when two people arrived on motorcycles and fired at him with a T-56 Rifle. The farmer survived the shooting, but this is not the first such incident residents claim.

Locals said that such attacks on villagers have become commonplace, with three murders so far.

“Who gave weapons to the killers?” said the protestors, as they sat on the main road preventing any vehicular movement.  “Protect our lives, where is the justice for our people?”

The Sri Lankan police are said to be carrying out further investigations into the shooting incident. Following the incident, all the vehicles coming to Mannar through the Mannar main bridge have been subjected to inspection by the police.
