"We must not forget about accountability and justice" - Lord Ahmad

Lord Tariq Ahmad, Britain's Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth, the United Nations and South Asia spoke to the British Tamil Conservatives (BTC) and emphasised the need to stand up for "important aspects of reconciliation" as well as "accountability and justice" in Sri Lanka.

During his interview with the BTC, he said that the government would focus on "ensuring that those who suffered were actually given justice and those who were perpetrators of crimes are also bought to justice".

He further added that that "the Tamil community is part of what defines modern Britain".

‘I have worked with the Tamil community for many many years from local government through to where I sit now […] We have the Conservative Tamil association which makes a massive contribution to the Conservative Party directly and why? Because what conservative values are, are shared by the British Tamil community’.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
