Wattavalai villagers demand justice for boy abused by Buddhist monk

Locals in Wattavalai held a protest to condemn a Buddhist monk for abusing a child in Templestow garden the previous day.

The Buddhist monk, of the Haiti garden vihara, has been arrested following a complaint filed by the victim's father at the Wattavalai police station.

The villagers launched the protest in front of the Templestow garden vihara, insisting that appropriate legal action be taken against the monk, to provide justice for the victim and prevent more children from being abused.

Many of the villagers held placards that read: “Protest against child abuse” and “we strongly condemn those that commit offences such as this”.

Children also held placards in both Tamil and Sinhala that read: “We deeply condemn the abuse of children. Everyone join with us to protect children from abuse such as this”.

The child has been admitted to Dikoya Klangan hospital for treatment.
