US State Department holds talks with Tamils in Washington

The Tamil National Alliance and members of the Global Tamil Forum met with the US State Department in Washington last week, as they discussed “political representation [and] reconciliation as part of a wholistic transitional justice agenda”.

The Office of Global Criminal Justice at the US State Department tweeted after the meeting that “listening to perspectives & concerns of minority groups in Sri Lanka is essential to promoting reconciliation”.

Talks were also held with the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor who afterwards said that “advancing the protection and political representation of minority groups in Sri Lanka is a priority for the United States”.

“The talks are laying the foundation for a US role in formulating and implementing durable political solution,” said Dr Elias Jeyarajah., a USTAG Governing Council Member and past President who was involved in the discussions.

“There is still a long way to go,” he added but said there was a “sympathetic hearing by a multitude of power centres of the United States government”.

“Fidelity to accountability is ensured,” he concluded. “There is no let up on that front.”
