US Secretary of State cancels trip to Sri Lanka

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo has cancelled his planned trip to Sri Lanka, the US embassy said in a statement today.

Pompeo will be accompanying the US president, Donald Trimp to the G20 summit in Japan, the statement said.

Stating that Pompeo did intend to visit Sri Lanka at another point in time, the statement did not however reveal when this would be.

“He hopes to travel to Sri Lanka at a later date to underscore our strong partnership with Sri Lanka, which is rooted in a commitment to democracy, economic growth and a free, open Indo-Pacific region. The United States remains committed to these objectives and looks forward to building on our longstanding partnership."
