UN promises ‘robust’ response to killing of Tanzanian peacekeepers in DRC

The United Nations has promised a “robust” military offensive in response to the killing of two Tanzanian peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The attack, suspected to have been carried out by the Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), also injured thirteen others.

It comes after the Congolese army said it had killed 16 of the Islamist militants during fighting over the weekend.

"This targeted attack against United Nations personnel is unacceptable and intolerable,” said Martin Kobler, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the DRC. “The attackers will be pursued with maximum efforts and minimum tolerance within the rules of engagement,” he said, adding "Monusco will carry out robust offensive operations."

The spokesperson for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the killings and spoke out against" continuing atrocities perpetrated by the ADF against defenceless civilians in the Beni area".
