UN Human Rights chief visits Trincomalee

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein visited Trincomalee as part of his trip to the Tamil North-East, calling on government officials and civil society activists.

The High Commissioner met with a delegation of civil society activists, led by Rev Fr Veeresan Yogeswaran, from the Centre for Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. As the High Commissioner arrived, banners were displayed outside calling on the United Nations to be actively involved in Sri Lanka’s justice process.

Mr Hussein also met with the Eastern Provincial Council’s Chief Minister Z.A. Nazeer Ahamed who discussed problems faced by people in the province, including the issue of missing persons and the devolution of powers to the North-East.

The High Commissioner also called on the Sri Lankan Governor of the Eastern Province Austin Fernando.
