United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Al Hussein met with politicians from the Tamil National Alliance in Colombo today, to discuss issues that face the Tamil people on the island.
Speaking to media after the meeting, TNA leader R. Sampanthan said they had stressed the need for the UNHRC resolution to be implemented completely and that a permanent political solution was necessary for true and sincere reconciliation.
TNA MP M. A. Sumanthiran told press that the High Commissioner had already spoken to the Sri Lankan government on what he felt were inexplicable delays in resettling Tamil IDPs. Even if the issue had been moving soldiers, it should not be taking so many years, Mr Sumanthiran recounted Prince Zeid as saying.
The delegation that met the High Commissioner included leader of the Tamil National Alliance R. Sampanthan, leader of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) Selvam Adaikalanathan, leader of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) D. Siddarthan, leader of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) Mavai Senathirajah, Jaffna district MP M. A. Sumanthiran and Colombo based human rights lawyer Niran Anketell.
