The UN nuclear agency has rebuked Iran over its nuclear program after a resolution expressing "serious concern" was overwhelmingly voted forward.
31 out of the 35 member states of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) voted for the resolution condemning Iran. The resolution was proposed by the United States, China, Russia, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Among those who abstained were Ecuador, Tunisia and Egypt abstained with only Cuba voting against it.
The United States envoy to the agency, Robert Wood, said,
"What we are hoping is that this resolution will keep ... diplomatic pressure up and convince Iran that it has really no other option than to comply with its international obligations,"
He went on to say,
“The diplomatic pressure on Iran is increasing... The isolation is increasing.”
The European Union also commented on the matter stating,
“Iran has not engaged seriously and without preconditions in talks aimed at restoring international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program.”
“Iran’s procrastination is unacceptable.”
Iran meanwhile brushed off the resolution with Iran’s envoy to the agency, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, saying that it would “only complicate the situation and jeopardize the cooperative environment which we desperately need”.
