UK MPs and British Tamils celebrate Thai Pongal in Parliament

Thai Pongal was celebrated with UK MPs and British Tamils at the Houses of Parliament last week.

Cultural performances accompanied words of support from British MPs from all three major parties at the event hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils and the British Tamils Forum.

The Thai Pongal day greeting of UK Prime Minister Theresa May was played at the event, and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn also sent in a message to be read out.

The event saw Parliament’s Jubilee Room packed out with members of the Tamil community spanning generations, and was supported by British Tamil Conservatives, Tamils for Labour and Tamil Liberal Democrats.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
