The Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) made an urgent appeal for humanitarian relief for the thousands displaced by extensive flooding and heavy rains across the East.
"Thousands of people have been affected in many parts of Sri Lanka by the heavy rains in the last few weeks. Particularly, in the southern Tamil Eelam districts of Tricomalee, Batticaloa and Amparai, thousands of people have left their lands and sought refuge in public places due to the heavy rainfall," the TNPF said in a statement on Tuesday.
"The people of Sampoor, in Trincomalee who have been denied resettlement after displacement from their lands since 2006 due to the war and are now living in displacement camps in Muthur have been largely affected."
"Especially, transport between the Kaddaipparichan area and Muthur has been disrupted, 1160 persons in the Kaddaiparichan displacement camp, 1005 persons in the Kiliveddi displacement camp, 428 persons in the Paddiththidal displacement camp, and, 217 persons in the Manal Chenai displacement camp are all without food, medicine, clean water and are facing starvation and sanitary issues."
"In the Batticaloa and Amparai districts, in many areas the flood water has covered the living areas and led to the displacement of thousands of families who have sought shelter in public places. In places including Pothuvil, Thirukkovil, Panama, Ampara, Akkaraipatru, Addalaichenai, Palamunai, Oluvil, Ninthavur, Sammanthurai, Karaithivu, Kalmunai, Nadpiddimunai, Navithanveli, and Maruthamunai, the flood water has entered the houses."
"Due to this a large number of people have displace and sought refuge in public places or staying in the houses of their relatives. Due to this rainfall, daily labour has been completely affected. Due to inclement weather in the seas, fishing too has come to a standstill. Thousands of fishermen have lost their wages due to this."
"We send an urgent appeal for immediate humanitarian relief and assistance to these affected people who have been directly or indirectly affected by the heavy rains and facing food, medical and sanitary issues."
