Sri Lankan court fines and sentences 30 Indian fishermen

Fishermen held in Srilanka

Thirty Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy last month for allegedly crossing into Sri Lankan waters near Thalaimannar have been produced before the Mannar Magistrate’s Court and handed suspended prison sentences and heavy fines.

The fishermen were detained while engaging in fishing activities off the Thalaimannar coast. The Sri Lankan Navy regularly conducts patrols in these waters, and arrests have continued despite repeated diplomatic discussions between New Delhi and Colombo.

During Thursday’s hearing, all thirty fishermen were presented before the Mannar Magistrate. After reviewing the charges, the court imposed a twelve-month suspended prison sentence on the first and second charges, which will remain suspended for ten years.
On the third charge, twenty-six of the fishermen were fined 250,000 rupees each.

Four others, who had been previously arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, released on conditions, and subsequently detained again, were fined 275,000 rupees each.

In addition to the sentencing, the Magistrate ordered the owners of the four seized boats to appear before the Mannar Magistrate’s Court on 19 March 2026. The court also directed that all other confiscated materials, except the vessels, be vested as state property.

Indian trawler incursions have been a long-standing and deeply contentious issue for Tamil fishermen across the Northern Province. Both governments continue to claim progress in bilateral talks, yet arrests, fines and vessel seizures remain a regular feature of the ongoing dispute.
