TESO resolution calls for international investigation

The Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation, a group founded by DMK head Karunanidhi, has passed a resolution calling on India to support an international investigation into Sri Lanka at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva.

The organisation, who met at the at 'Anna Arivalayam' in Chennai with Karunanidhi chairing, unanimously condemned the Indian government’s approach on Sri Lanka and called upon the government to support a resolution calling for an international investigation on Sri Lanka.

However, the resolution was greeted with scepticism by students in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to the Tamil Guardian on the TESO resolution, V Prabhakaran of the Tamil Youths & Students Federation stated,

“We are aware that even during the UNHRC session in March 2013, TESO and the DMK alliance supported the resolution and wanted an investigation into war crimes on Sri Lanka.”

“But we students were very clear in our demands, what happened is a genocide and so we demanded an international investigation on genocide.”

Prabhakaran went on to add that the DMK was only acting in response to increased pressure from youth groups in Tamil Nadu, noting

“The same TESO which fully supported the a resolution on war crimes in March 2013, after seeing the power of the students’ protest, released a statement against the water downed resolution 2 weeks later.”

The TESO resolution, which also called for increased powers to the recently appointed Northern Provincial Council under the 13th amendment, was slammed by Prabhakaran, who went on to add,

“An international investigation into genocide and an internationally monitored referendum is the only diplomatic solution possible. No compromise on anything less than a free Eelam.”
