While the LTTE was in control of the area, thousands of Tamils, including families of those who died fighting in the liberation movement, gathered to pay their respects at the cemeteries on Maaveerar Naal every year. Previously, the government stationed troops around the sites of the cemeteries to prevent commemoration.
