In a number of separate protests, students in Tamil Nadu took to the streets demonstrating against the Central government's failure to lead the call for the international investigation into allegations of mass atrocities in the final stages of the armed conflict, whilst others also went onto to demand a referendum to be held on an independent state of Tamil Eelam.

Students from Nanthanam Arts College, boycotted classes in protest on Monday, as the UNHRC's 25th session began, calling on New Delhi to support a resolution call for an international investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

The students also condemned the Centre's move to halt the release of those charged with involvement in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

Students also demanded the Indian government bring a resolution stating an international investigation on genocide and a referendum to establish an independent state of Tamil Eelam.

Giving national political parties a three day deadline to make public their stand on the issue, students warned that they would intensify the protests if the parties failed to do so.

Speaking to the Tamil Guardian, one of the organisers, V Prabhakaran said,
"This is the start of the upcoming students uprising. Today we burnt the Congress flag and showed our hatred over congress."

"We will protest until Tamil people get justice."
