Tamil Nadu seeks to ban Family Man 2 for demeaning depiction of Eelam Tamils

In response to the release of “The Family Man 2” trailer, the Tamil Nadu government has written to the Indian government requesting immediate action to ban the release of the Amazon Prime Web series for its highly objectionable depiction of Eelam Tamils.

This comes following a backlash from Tamil netizens who voiced their concerns over the series on Twitter using the hashtag #FamilyMan2_against_Tamils.

Writing to the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar, Tamil Nadu Information Technology Minister T. Mano Thangaraj warned that the release of the series would not only hurt the sentiments of Eelam Tamils but also the feelings of the people of Tamil Nadu. He further added, “it would be prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony in the State.”

His letter went on to state that:

“The sacrifices of their long-drawn-out democratic battle has been intentionally undermined and it could not, by any stretch of imagination considered merely as a serial with any value for Tamil Culture. Moreover, a serial, which is loaded with insults and insinuations against the glorious Tamil culture could never be considered as the one having any broadcasting value,” Mr. Thangaraj contended”.

“Branding Tamil-speaking actress Samantha as a terrorist” in the serial was directly an attack on the pride of Tamils living around the world and no one would tolerate this kind of motivated and mischievous campaign, he said. The trailer “has already evoked strong and widespread opposition from the people of Tamil Nadu as well as from the political parties in the State,” he said.

Javadekar further blasted Amazon stating that “it is highly unwarranted for an organisation like Amazon Prime to undertake this kind of smear campaign against the Tamils, who are builders of India as well as many nations across the globe,” the Minister added.

MDMK leader, Vaiko, shared these criticisms noting that Samantha’s depiction “has hurt the sentiments of Tamil people”. He further added that the series was “condemnable, inappropriate and malicious” for its distortion of the Eelam Tamil struggle.

Naam Tamilar Katchi chief coordinator, Seeman, further maintained that:

“The series seeks to intentionally portray the LTTE as terrorists and Tamils as vicious people”.
