Tamil Nadu groups call for postponement of IPL cricket match in Chennai on May 18

Tamil organisations have called for the postponement of an Indian Premier League cricket match, due to be played on the 18th of May in Chennai, according to the New Indian Express.

The Tamil National Alliance, a “collective of pro-Tamil organisations”, unrelated to the alliance of the same name in Sri Lanka, said that the match will hurt the sentiments of Tamils if played on May 18, as it is the day that Tamils around the world commemorate the genocide against Tamils.

“Tamils organise various programmes to commemorate May 18. Hosting the IPL match on that day in Chennai will hurt the sentiments of Tamils,” said Rajkumar Palaniswamy, a leader of the group, to the paper.

“We will hold protests if permission is accorded for the match on. They can host it on any other day in Chennai, not on May 18,” he added.

The Chennai Super Kings are due to play the Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chepauk Stadium in Tamil Nadu’s state capital Chennai on May 18.
