"With tears we've searched for our loved ones - where are they?" read placards, also demanding that Tamil political prisoners be released.
In a petition to the new president, Maithripala Sirisena, the women said: "The new government should find a good solution soon by bringing the issues of the political prisoners that are in prisons for a long time to the fore."
Crying out, one woman told journalists: "I've waited 6 years, I can't wait any more. Where are our children? Tell us where our children are? Why are you tormenting us?"
"Where is my child? I can't live without my child," said another.
