Students commemorate Maaveerar Naal in Copenhagen

At the University of Copenhagen, Tamil students have gathered to mark Maaveeerar Naal, a day dedicated to remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the Tamil liberational struggle.

The remembrance event saw theatrical dance performances, poems, songs, and speeches dedicated to those who gave up their lives for the cause. The event initiated with the lighting of the traditional lamp, before raising the Tamil national flag to a song in memory of the first death of a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadre, Lt Col. Shankar, who died in combat on November 27, 1982.

A commemorative event is planned to be held in the coming days by the students of the university.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
