A farmer from the Madukkarai village in Mannar - who harvested around 4000kg of pumpkins - has been unable to sell his pumpkins due to curfew restrictions affecting the business at the Dambulla vegetable market.
The father of three, was able to cultivate a good yield prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. However, he is now struggling to sell his pumpkins due to customers not being able to have access to his product at the Dambulla market, due to the lockdown.
The farmer who has farming for his whole life, took out a loan to ensure that he was able to harvest a good yield of pumpkins. Due to the complications of the military-enforced curfew, he has now kept the pumpkins he harvested, in three rooms of his house and hopes that he can sell them off soon.
He has appealed to the local Mannar state officials, who he hopes will assist him in selling the pumpkins for a fair price, so he can pay off his loan. He is still awaiting a response from the Sri Lanka government about selling his goods for a fair price.
