Sri Lankan police question 6, including former MP, over Prabhakaran’s birthday celebration

At least six people have been interrogated by the Sri Lankan police over the celebration of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's birthday outside his childhood home last month, which took place under heavy police surveillance.

Former Northern Provincial Councillor M Shivajilingham and local residents gathered outside the ruins of the LTTE leader's home today to celebrate his birthday on November 26th.

Sri Lankan police officers who were present told the crowd that Prabhkaran's photograph could not be displayed and ordered that his photograph should be removed from the banner. The organisers obliged and removed the photograph but continued to cut a birthday cake and plant coconut saplings to mark the occasion.

Despite the event going ahead with the police still present, this week Sri Lankan authorities announced they had launched an investigation it.

Reports also indicate that steps are being taken to draw up charge sheets against those who were in attendance.
