A Sri Lankan police officer from Mannar, stationed at the Kopay Police Station, was arrested in Trincomalee in possession of 50 grams of methamphetamine, commonly known as the drug "ice."

The detained police officer is currently held at the Trincomalee police station, where investigators are pursuing the case. The arrest comes even as the police force announced an anti-narcotics crackdown and highlights a prevalence of drug-related misconduct within the police force.

Though tens of thousands of Sri Lankan troops remain stationed in the Tamil North-East, illegal drug use continues to have a high prevalence.

Thousands have already been detaiend across the island, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights urging Sri Lanka to comply with a human-rights based approach.
