Sri Lankan police disrupt Maaveerar Naal preparations at Kanchikudiyaru Thuyilum Illam

The Sri Lankan police disrupted locals as they cleaned Kanchikudiyaru Thuyilum Illam in Amparai last week.

Despite their interference, locals and parliamentarians S Kajendren and T Kalaiyarasan continued to clean the former cemetery in preparation of Maaveerar Naal.

Every year, Sri Lanka’s state forces ramp up their surveillance and intimidation of Tamils in the month of November as the Tamil nation remember the tens of thousands of Tamil fighters who sacrificed their lives.

Although the state have repeatedly attempted to suppress Tamil memorialisation activities in the North-East, Tamils have been defiant in remembering and honouring those who have lost their lives in the Tamil struggle for liberation.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
