Sri Lankan intelligence officer intimidates Tamil families of the disappeared in Mullaitivu

A plain-clothed Sri Lankan intelligence officer videoed Tamil families of the disappeared as they marked Human Rights Day in Mullaitivu yesterday.

The officer held up a phone and videoed the families as they were lined up and holding placards and photographs of their forcibly disappeared relatives, an act of intimidation commonly used by Sri Lanka's security forces.

In his last report, the UN High Commissioner Volker Turk noted that Tamil families of the disappeared faced intimidation, surveillance and reprisals for engaging with the UN or international actors.

"Female victims in particular, reported receiving late-night calls from individuals claiming to be CID or TID personnel, who questioned them about their participation in protests and visits to Colombo or Geneva, including funding and individuals they had met," Turk wrote.

Protests took place across the North-East yesterday as Tamil families of the disappeared continue to seek answers for their loved ones who were forcibly disappeared by Sri Lanka.
