Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremeisnghe pledged that his government would bear the costs for the renovation of the golden roof for a Buddhist vihara in Kandy, after meeting with monks during a ceremony held in his honour today.

The prime minister made the declaration during a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, a Sinhala Buddhist holy site, where a religious ceremony was being held to mark 40 years of his political career.

The golden roof of the vihara was originally constructed by former Sri Lankan President Premadasa. It is not yet known how much the refurbishment will cost.
