Sri Lankan army soldier arrested over double murder in Mannar

Mannar shooting

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the recent shooting incident in Mannar, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left two others injured, including a serving member of the Sri Lanka Army who is believed to have been the gunman, according to police sources.

The shooting took place on January 16th, in front of the Mannar Court. The victims, 61-year-old Saveriyan Arul and 42-year-old Selvakumar Jude, were attending a court hearing related to a dispute that began in June 2022. The attack was carried out by assailants who arrived on a motorcycle and used a pistol to commit the crime. The injured victims were transported to Mannar Hospital for medical treatment.

This incident has raised concerns about the involvement of the military in violent crimes in the Tamil North-East. Historically, there have been allegations of military complicity in disappearances and murders in the region. The presence of armed forces in civilian areas remains a contentious issue, with ongoing calls for accountability and justice.

The shooting has caused alarm in the North-east, a region known for its heavy military presence. The court hearing was connected to a previous conflict from June 2022, where a disagreement during a bullock cart ride in Mannar Uyilankulam led to the murder of two brothers.

Investigations into the incident are reportedly ongoing.
