Sri Lankan army involves itself in Nallur chariot festival

Sri Lankan soldiers oversaw the distribution of food at the famous chariot festival of the Nallur temple in Jaffna last month, as criticism of the military’s involvement in civil life in the North-East continues.

Troops of 2nd Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment and 14th Battalion of Gajaba Regiment, under 512 Brigade, distributed over 7,000 packets of food, said an official military website.

The Sri Lankan army is still heavily involved in civilian life in the Tamil North-East, with officials from the security forces declaring the military presence in the region would not be reduced.
