Sri Lanka awards scholarships for children of military 'war heroes'

Children of Sri Lankan military personnel who were killed or severely injured were given scholarships on Monday, in a ceremony at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRS) in Colombo.

One hundred and two children received such scholarships at the event, which organised by the Ranaviru Seva Authority, chaired by the wife of the former army general, Sarath Fonseka.

"As Sri Lankans we are able to enjoy the dividends of peace due to the sacrifices made by the war heroes and as a mark of appreciation the Ministry of Defence has taken measures to liaise with relevant agencies to provide relief to the problems faced by the War Heroes," the state minister of defence, Ruwan Wijewardene was quoted by the defence media unit as saying, whilst addressing the event.

Mr Wijewardena also "reminded the children that they have received these scholarships due to the sacrifices of their parents and requested them to study well and be useful citizens".
