SL police urge public to give info on Ava gang via new hot line

Sri Lankan police have established a special phone line for the public to call and give information on 'Ava gang' which the police say is operating in the North, Hiru News reports.

The Senior DIG in the Northern province, Roshan Dernando claimed that all information would be kept confidential.

The phone line comes amid increased arrests by Sri Lankan police of Tamil youth over accusations of involvement in gang violence.

Locals however have criticised the police over the arrests saying that the police is arresting innocent boys just to close cases whilst leaving the real criminals to roam free.

Increased incidents of gang violence in the Northern province have also raised questions among residents about how this could be taking place in a region that remains deeply militarised.

"How are these sword attacks and violent robberies happening without the military's knowledge?," one mother in Jaffna asked.
