The Sri Lankan Army has erected the largest Christmas tree in the island, for Tamils in Kilinochchi, to "show their solidarity towards the resettled community during this season of peace and giving."

"The teaching of love and understanding that brings the spirit of sharing, which marks the celebration of Christmas, would help in strengthening the bridges of peace, tolerance and reconciliation that are being built in the country."This recent endeavour is the latest in the military's encroachment on day to day life of Tamils in the North-East, from festivals, to school education.
