Sirisena tells Commonwealth he is acting within constitution

Sri Lanka's president, Maithripala Sirisena insisted he has acted within the country's constitution in a phonecall to the Commonwealth Secretary General, Patricia Scotland.

"A telephone conversation with Baroness Patricia Scotland, he explained that he has very clearly asked the Speaker of parliament to follow the Parliamentary Standing Orders and conventions and take any vote on a No Confidence Motion using the electronic voting system or by name," the president's media division said.

Sri Lanka has been in a state of crisis for several weeks following Sirisena's shock sacking of the Sri Lankan prime minister and dissolution of parliament.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
